write your own obit
i had to write my own bio today, for the "photo wall" of all the faculty at school.
it was a little strange at first, much like i imagine writing your own obituary might be (you remember that writing exercise from college?). there's the tendency to want to mention your degrees and specific achievements which, in the end, only ends up sounding pretentious. plus, wordiness is a factor, literally. nothing to do with pretentiousness here, you just can't say too much because space is limited. 2-3 sentences max, a short paragraph basically.
it got me thinking, how would a short paragraph about my life read? what would i want it to say? what really matters?
2-3 sentences...what would yours say?
